Frequently Asked Questions.
What is a rooftop package unit (RTU) and how does it work?
A Rooftop Package Unit (RTU) is a self-contained HVAC system installed on top of a building. It combines compressor(s), evaporator, condenser, blower, heating coil (gas or electric), and controls into one weatherproof cabinet. The RTU draws in outdoor and return air, filters it, conditions it (cooling, heating, dehumidifying), then distributes it via ductwork throughout zones.
What are the benefits of using a rooftop packaged unit?
Space saving: All components housed on the rooftop, freeing up indoor or ground-level space.
Reduced indoor noise: Machinery located outdoors improves occupant comfort.
Simplified maintenance: One cabinet makes service access easier.
Energy efficiency: Many RTUs incorporate variable speed drives, economizers, and heat recovery systems.
All-in-one design: Supports heating, cooling, ventilation, and filtration in a single unit.
In which applications are rooftop units most commonly used?
RTUs are widely used in:
Retail stores, restaurants, schools, office buildings, hotels, warehouses, and supermarkets
Medium-rise buildings (typically up to 8–10 stories) where ducted distribution is practical.
Are RTUs energy-efficient and sustainable?
Modern designs are optimized for efficiency: built-in economizers, variable speed compressors and fans, heat recovery, and high-performance filtration help reduce operational energy and emissions.
